As an Indian expat who has been based in dubai for the past 33 years, i have been spending time reading and finding out more about highly relevant and compelling leaders from Arabian history comparable to Al Zeer Salem.
Some such leaders are leaders like Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Shiekh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the other Rulers of UAE. Their lives and leadership offer enduring lessons on ethical, visionary, and meaningful leadership that resonates profoundly in the modern corporate and governance world. Since Eid Al Etihad is approaching, it would be appropriate to write about the leadership of UAE, and the lessons the Corporate world could learn from their leadership. Eid Al Etihad means “Festival of the Union” and is the official name for the UAE National Day, celebrated on December 2nd. The name was changed to emphasize the nation’s core values of unity, heritage, and strength since the seven emirates united in 1971.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918-2004) was the principal driving force behind the formation of the UAE in 1971 and served as its first President until his death. He is widely celebrated for his humility, wisdom, compassion, and forward-looking vision that transformed a cluster of impoverished desert emirates into a prosperous and stable federation known today. His leadership is marked by principled decision-making, inclusiveness, and prioritizing the welfare of his people. Pillars that align closely with strong corporate governance and ethical leadership in business.
Lessons from UAE’s Leadership for Today’s Corporate World
1. Visionary and Long-Term Thinking
The greatest strength of UAE leaders has been the ability to envision a future that transcended immediate personal or regional interests. They have laid down a clear path for sustainable development, balancing rapid modernization with the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental conservation. In today’s corporate governance, this translates to leaders embracing long-term strategic thinking, beyond quarterly profits, focusing on legacy, stakeholder value, and responsible growth.
2. Ethical Governance and Integrity
UAE Rulers have ruled with a deep moral compass, emphasizing consultation, justice, and accountability. Their authenticity and ethical stance have earned profound trust and legitimacy — qualities vital in business leadership to foster transparency, build stakeholder confidence, and manage reputational risks. For corporations, prioritizing ethics cultivates a resilient organizational culture that can weather market and societal challenges.
3. Inclusive and People-Centric Leadership
Sheikh Zayed’s leadership was rooted in empathy, inclusiveness, and attention to community needs. Whether it was empowering women, supporting education, healthcare, or ensuring social equity, his governance sought to uplift every segment of society. Business leaders today can draw from this by adopting stakeholder-inclusive approaches, ensuring decisions respect not only shareholders but employees, customers, and communities, thereby fulfilling broader corporate social responsibility mandates.
4. Adaptability and Embracing Change
Sheikh Zayed was open to new ideas and international cooperation, which enabled the UAE to partner globally and adopt best practices while customizing them to local contexts. Modern corporate leaders must similarly embrace innovation and agility, balancing tradition with disruption. This mindset is critical as businesses navigate AI, sustainability, and evolving regulatory environments.
5. Building Institutions and Legacy through Collaboration
Although he was a powerful ruler, Sheikh Zayed emphasized building institutions and collective governance frameworks for continuity beyond his personal tenure. The UAE federation is a testament to collaborative leadership that values structured governance. In corporate terms, this highlights the importance of robust board structures, effective stakeholder engagement, and leadership succession planning.
One of Sheikh Zayed’s most extraordinary leadership feats was his instrumental role in uniting the seven separate emirates into the cohesive federation known today as the UAE. In 1971, faced with the British withdrawal from the Gulf, many feared fragmentation and potential conflicts among the emirates. Sheikh Zayed demonstrated visionary and diplomatic leadership by initiating and sustaining years of delicate negotiations with other rulers, including the equally charismatic and visionary Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai. Despite tribal rivalries and long-standing differences, he persistently promoted cooperation and unity, recognizing that collective strength was essential for prosperity and security.
Sheikh Zayed’s leadership here exemplifies inclusiveness, strategic vision, and ethical stewardship critical for complex organizational leadership and alliance-building in today’s corporate world.
The Transformation of Al Ain Oasis
Before becoming the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed served as governor of Al Ain, a community on the brink of environmental and social collapse. Instead of ruling from afar, he took a hands-on approach, often rising at dawn to work alongside farmers, learning irrigation repair skills, and personally resolving disputes over water resources. He revised outdated water ownership laws to ensure equitable distribution, restoring the ancient falaj irrigation system that had fallen into disrepair.
His direct engagement and fairness turned Al Ain from an almost deserted oasis into a flourishing, green agricultural hub and peaceful community.
Examples in Corporate Governance and Leadership Culture
The leadership journey of the UAE Rulers is a beacon for contemporary business leaders and corporate governance practitioners. Their blend of visionary foresight, unwavering ethics, compassion, and institution-building provides a rich template for sustainable leadership. In a world where corporate actions are scrutinized more than ever, adopting such principled and inclusive leadership practices can create organizations that are not only profitable but also just, respected, and resilient.
As Sheikh Zayed himself wisely said:
“The real wealth of a nation lies in the happiness of its people, its security, and its cultural heritage.”
This timeless maxim reminds corporate leaders that beyond the balance sheets, true success is measured by the positive impact on communities and the enduring values a leader instills.
It is a matter of immense happiness and pride to see that the current rulers carry that legacy forward with the same commitment, dedication and zeal
